CUSTOM RODS
Bamboo fly rods have an inherent beauty and grace. These qualities are as much a result of form as of design. Heritage, tradition and craftsmanship are all integral parts of a quality split-cane fly rod. Whether using a taper created by master rod makers from the past or casting actions developed by modern makers, there is never a doubt that the fisherperson is holding something that has a soul.
My rods are all planed from premium tonkin bamboo. After being handselected the culm is split into narrow strips. Each strip is planed to hold 60° angles that give the rod its distinctive hexagonal shape . After the strips are tapered utilizing tolerances of a thousandth of an inch, they are heat treated. It is the heat treating process that creates the rich chestnut color of my flamed rods. From there an additional 20-25 hours are spent on the finish of the rod.

- Solid Walnut Reel Seats (for flamed rods)
- Solid Box Elder Burl Reel Seats (for natural toned rods)
- Custom Leather Rod Cases available separately from James Acord
Our blanks come complete with a reel seat made up of exotic wood insert and nickle-silver components, antique stripping guide, line guides and a tip top. Also included is a tube and rod sock. These blanks are hand made to the exact specifications that are the same as those in a rod that I would completely finish as a custom rod. Ideal for someone that has experience in building graphite rods, someone that wants to make a bamboo rod but not invest in the equipment required to actually make a rod from "scratch" or someone that simply wants to experience the delicate feel of casting a hand made rod made to their own specifications.
Standard blanks are made as 2 piece/one tip rods. Second tip add $100. For flamed rods add $50. All prices are minus shipping costs. Generally, we have a selection of rod blanks of various tapers available for immediate delivery. You can also request tapers for your blank other than the classic rods listed and priced below.
